Author's Note on Vernacular and Colloquialisms Used In Articles On This Site
It may be noted by some that many of my "Haunting Tales of Old New Orleans" contain comments, words, and discourse that today might be considered "politically incorrect" in the mind of the average informed reader. The inclusion of these examples of local vernacular and colloquialisms in the stories and legends presented here is a conscious effort on the part of the author to reproduce, to the greatest extent possible, the atmosphere and mindset of the time in which many of the folktales originated. It is not meant to offend or provoke, but rather to preserve the realities and daily nuances of an era in New Orleans and Louisiana - the "Creole Epoch" - that, though familiar to older generations, is fast fading from the character of New Orleans. It is my sincere hope that you read and enjoy these tales in the context and spirit in which they are intended. Thank you.

Demon du Jour TROIS
Many people experiment with ceremonial magic under the mistaken impression that the beings evoked are not part of objective reality and therefore cannot harm them. Far too many pararnormal teams walk blindly into investigations where the real power of ritual and dark magic has been practiced openly or concealed. Here's some of those "not objectively real" beings you might encounter when this is taken for granted!
Meet Today's “Demon du Jour”
BELIAL
Belial is the 68th Spirit of Solomon's Shemhamforash and a mighty King. Belial was created after Lucifer and is one of the origina Djinn who would not bow to the clay of Adam. Belial is traditionally the Lord of the Earth, the Lord of the Sorcerer's Path, and the powerful demonic Will made Flesh. Belial often appears in the form of beautiful twin angels riding in a chariot of fire. He speaks in a calm and beguiling voice, with a bare hint of the sinister about it. Belial governs 50 legions of Celestial and Infernal Spirits, and Spirits of the Earth. He brings the sorcerer success in worldly pursuits and all worldly desires are at his disposal; he will also initiate the sorcerer on the path of the Lunar Gnosis, the path of the werewolf and the vampyre. But King Belial demands a sacrifice and this sacrifice must be sexual in nature. A powerful will is required to summon, restrain, and hold this Infernal force in the evocation circle or black mirror. If the will of the sorcerer fails, the force will immolate the sorcerer from within. In the Dead Sea scrolls Belial is called "an angel of destruction ... whose dominion is darkness." The name Belial means "worthless."
PAIMON
Paimon is an angelic-daemon of Lucifer who appears as a crowned man mounted upon a camel. This spirit is a familiar of music and his evocation aids in its creation. A powerful King of Witchcraft, Paimon has 200 legions at his command - half composed of angels, the other half of Potentates. Paimon is often accompanied by two attendant spirits - Label and Ablim - as he is one of the most significant angelic rulers. Paimon, along with the more bestial Astaroth, opens the way to the "grail" of Lucifer's crown - the understanding of the "I" of the isolate self. Paimon is a higher spirit of self-initiation, a pathmaker to one's own understanding and becoming, and is the Guardian of the Path to Leviathan, the Lord of the Depths.
RAUM
Raum is the 40th spirits of Solomon, a Great Earl who in the black mirror or circle of evocation will appear in the form of a crow, but can be commanded to take on human form by the sorcerer. Raum is said to be able to gather secrets like the crow gathers its nest and to lead the sorcerer to treasures; he will also aid in divination. An angel of the Order of Thrones, Raum is capable of destroying the haughty and the dignities of man, and governs 30 legions of like spirits.
NIYAZ
The Yatukan daemon Niyaz is pure Chaos and will cause distress and discord among one's enemies. He will spread disruption and suffering and if sent through the black mirror will attack and destroy the enemies of the sorcerer. This is his sole purpose and his evocation should be handled accordingly, and then only when all other avenues have been exhausted.
ASPENJARGACK
A Yatukan daemon of rain and storms, he can be sent as a wraith to attack the enemies of the sorcerer through dreams.
BAEL
Bael is the spirit of shape-shifting - by the cat (stealth and instinct), the toad (the form of Satan), and as the pathway to self-initiation (through angelic witchcraft).
Bael should be summoned in the protection of the evocation circle and the sorcerer must seek to align oneself with the anthropomorphic form created from the visualization of the being as described above. Appearing as a man with three heads - cat, toad, and angelic being - Bael will guide the sorcerer's ability to shape-shift through dreams. He commands 66 legions of spirits and familiars.
CIMEJES
Cimejes (sometimes Kimaris) is the 66th Spirit of Solomon. He is a powerful Marquis who apears in the form of a warrior riding upon a large, black horse. Cimejes rules over all the spirits that are haunters of the continent of Africa and governs 20 legions of other Infernal Spirits.
He will teach logic, grammar, and divination, revealing understanding of the subconscious will.
AHRIMAN
Ahriman is the Great Adversary of Persian sorcery who manifests in Darkness and dwells in the filth of the Universe. He awakens the Black Flame in the initiate and inspires devotion on the path of the Yatuk-Dinoih, the Left Hand Way. Ahriman is the God form of the Opposing Shadow who plumbs the Darkness to discover the black light of the shadow soul. Related to the Zoroastrian religion as Anga-Mainyu, Ahriman was known to the Greeks and Romans as Arimanus, the Great Kakodaimon. Ahriman is dangerous to invoke as he is the one who stands as the Guardian of the Universal Threshold; there he speaks in whispering voices as numerous as the desert sands. Invoked for the right reasons, Ahriman will reveal to the sorcerer all hidden knowledge; invoked for the wrong reasons, Ahriman will consume the mind of the sorcerer, devouring it from the inside-out. One legend says that Ahriman was the Seraph who was the first to tear from his mother’s womb only to be rejected by his father, Zurvan, who soon cast him from heaven to earth and into hell. Ahriman is called The Adversary in Constant Motion. To the sorcerer, Ahriman is the embodiment of all desires.
AIGHASH
Aighash, a malignant and dangerous daemon of the Yatukan pantheon, holds the essence of the Sight of Sorcery. It is via the means to command one to look that the sorcerer is able to make the eyes of his or her enemy the true windows of the soul. Aighash teaches the sorcerer to apply the power of conscious thought to activate the piercing stare of the Luciferian Will in his or her environment.
BERITH
Berith is a great spirit who appears as a soldier of Medieval Europe; he is clothed in red, wearing a crown, and rides a crimson steed. He is a divinatory spirit who sends visions and reveals messages to the sorcerer in the dream state. He may be a tool to self-understanding throughout the initiatory process, guiding one to the strengthening of the self that is the alchemist’s true “gold.” Berith governs 26 legions of spirits and is a powerful servitor to summon and guard one during rites of self-exploration.
FORAS
Foras is the 31st Spirit of Solomon and appears as a strong, virile man. Foras is essential in the initiation and self-introspection process. He teaches logic and ethics in magical practices and inspires the healthy upkeep of the human body. Foras also has the ability of helping the magician to control and manipulate the barriers of time, slowing time, speeding up time, and manipulating others’ perception of the passage of time.
TAPREV
A Yatukan daemon who teaches men and women the art of herbalism, in particular the arts of poisoning, cursing, and destruction of others. Taprev aids in astral warfare, poisoning the spirit energy of the magician’s enemies; he will also create astral poisons in the weak-minded, wrapping around the brain and slowly draining it of vital life force.
BUER
A demon of one’s becoming through philosophy and instinct, Buer responds to the sorcerer through inspiration leading one to work out the answers on his own. Buer is also a Sabbatic familiar guiding the sorcerer to a better understanding of the Sabbat ritual. Buer governs 50 legions of spirits.
FRIFTAR
Translated as “Deceiver,” this Yatukan daemon assists the sorcerer in the manipulation of the situation around him or her. Friftar alters pre-conceived notions and ideas within the sorcerer, particularly those dealing with desire and pleasure. He may also enable the sorcerer on the path of Adversarial self-deification.
Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the first millennium BC. He normally has a dog-like face like here, and where his body is depicted he has a scaly torso, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings. He is often regarded as an evil underworld demon, but he seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mother's womb or when newly born.
"Pazuzu, Lord of Fevers and Plagues, Dark Angel of the Four Winds with rotting genitals from which he howls through sharpened teeth over stricken cities…."
William S. Burroughs, Cities of the Red Night
Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. Amulets of Pazuzu like this were therefore placed in windows hung inside and out of dwellings, attached to bedroom furniture. Smaller versions were hung around the necks of pregnant women.
